Hoffman Via Monte Community Center

Project Background
The Strong Neighborhoods Initiative (SNI) neighborhood improvement plan created by the Hoffman/Via Monte Neighborhood Action Coalition (NAC) in April 2002 includes the development of a neighborhood center as its number one priority. As an interim solution before a permanent site could be secured, a 900 square foot community center was established in a small commercial shopping center on Blossom Hill Road. The center is on a five-year lease and serves as a meeting space for monthly (NAC) meetings and is currently being used for a summer camp program during the day that serves 50 neighborhood children. The center is a focal point for the neighborhood, serving as a host to various meetings and events; the center is also a vital resource for information on the City of San Jose, Redevelopment Agency and non-profit services.

For the past year staff has worked with the NAC to help identify potential locations for a permanent center. A list of sites was produced with the help of the NAC and San Jose Redevelopment Agency staff. The site options were presented at the February 22, 2008, neighborhood meeting where residents gave input and asked questions. The residents then prioritized the sites with the location at the corner of Mesa and Gallup Drives receiving the most votes. The selected site is anchored between the two areas of the neighborhood. The proposed size of the neighborhood center is approximately 3,500 square feet.
