The Changing Face of Downtown San Jose

From jazzy new signs to facade improvements to the creation of new retail space, the face of Downtown San Jose continues to change in many impactful ways.

The innovative Downtown Signage Grant program is incentivizing lively Signage throughout Downtown. New business signs are appearing all over Downtown. Peggy Sue's (183 Park Ave), Caper's Loft Bar and Bistro (90 S. Second) and Blue Monkey (1 E. San Fernando) are all examples of how Signage can create great visibility for a business, resulting in increased traffic as well as an enhanced pedestrian experience.

Several buildings in Downtown San Jose are getting new facelifts through the Redevelopment Agency's Facade Improvement Program. Some of the latest rehabilitated storefronts include:
the Historic Meat Market property (142 E. Santa Clara) and Hank Coca's Downtown Furniture building (82 E. Santa Clara). Retail space is available at the Historic Meat Market property.

Other buildings around Downtown San Jose are renovating to accommodate the changing needs of a growing Downtown. Legacy Partners is renovating the Horizon Building, located at Second and East Santa Clara Streets to accommodate more retail space. Meanwhile, the historic Sainte Claire building (San Carlos and First Streets), which is home to Original Joe's, is undergoing renovations to accommodate 30-35 lofts on the upper floors and rehabilitated ground floor retail space.

For more information about the Signage Grant Program, please contact Liz Nunez at (408) 795-1801 and for the Facade Improvement Program, please contact Dolores Montenegro at (408) 1872
. For inquiries about the retail spaces mentioned, please email sanjoseretail@sanjoseca.gov.

Office Recruitment Program

The San Jose Redevelopment Agency is preparing to launch a new Office Tenant Recruitment and Retention Program. Key components of this program are under development now. The first priority is developing a comprehensive database of properties, property-owners, brokers, vacancies, and current tenants. In addition, a map of the Core Business District office property vacancies, and a comprehensive marketing package will be part of the cadre of tools developed.

Having these tools in hand, the Agency will actively participate in the recruitment and retention process, support the brokers and property owners. For more information please contact Angela Kelly at (408) 795-1861.
